Our Pastor
John Tyson In 2018, Des Moines Mennonite Church welcomed Pastor John Tyson to the congregation. John grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia in a large Nazarene mega-church but, through important friendships and his own study of scripture, began to identify as a Mennonite Christian in early adulthood. His connection to a Mennonite understanding of Christian faith increased as an undergraduate student at Eastern Mennonite University (Harrisonburg, VA), where he began to sense a calling to ministry. In 2014, John completed his Masters of Divinity at Princeton Theological Seminary (Princeton, NJ) and accepted a call as Associate Pastor for Faith Formation at Bethel College Mennonite Church (North Newton, KS). In the summer of 2018, John began in his role as pastor of Des Moines Mennonite Church. John is passionate about discerning what it means to be an Anabaptist in our current cultural context. He seeks to be a catalyst for people to help them discover what God is doing in their personal lives and within the church today. John especially enjoys the task of preaching, connecting with children, youth, and families, and helping the church become a more vital presence in the city. John is married to Amy and they have two young children. In his spare time, John enjoys playing basketball at the local Y, reading, watching Philadelphia sports, and exploring Des Moines. John enjoys sharing coffee and conversation. If you'd like to meet with John, please contact him at john@desmoinesmennonite.org! |
